We understand how difficult it can be to live with this debilitating condition that devastates many people’s lives, especially when they are told by their doctor that there is no cure for it.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic anxiety disorder commonly characterized by obsessive, distressing, intrusive thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or "rituals") which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

Typically the OCD sufferer performs tasks (or compulsions) to get relief from obsession-related anxiety. Some examples of these tasks are repeatedly checking that one's front door has been locked before leaving home, turning lights on and off a set number of times before exiting a room, repeatedly washing hands at regular intervals throughout the day, touching objects a certain amount of times before leaving a room, or walking in a certain routine way.

OCD sufferers are aware that their thoughts and behaviour are irrational, but they feel compelled to fulfil them to keep away feelings of panic or dread.

Although everyone may experience unpleasant thoughts at one time or another, these are short-lived and fade away in time. For people with OCD, however, the thoughts are intrusive and persistent, and cause them great anxiety and distress.

Case history

Cynthia is one of our clients who had suffered from OCD for 17 years.

It began by having to check that all the doors and windows were locked before she went to work and over time developed into having to set her alarm clock one hour before she needed to so that she could check each lock and electrical switch including the oven was turned of 30 times each.

She was sometimes arriving late for work, feeling exhausted as a result of the compulsive checking.

She was planning to move in with her “patient” long term partner and was beginning to check his house as well as her own.

If it she continued like this she calculated that the extra drive to work from her new home would mean that she would have to get up at 4 am to check and get to work on time.

Cynthia wrote to us following her success with Positive Change, and kindly agreed to share her words with you:

“I really can’t believe how amazingly my life has turned around since I did the Lightning Process with Maxine.

Within a week I had added an 45 minutes to my day by not having to check all the time and 6 months later I don’t feel the need at all – except for normal (once only) checking doors and windows before I go out to work.

An additional benefit is that I have much more energy than I’ve had for years. I also feel relaxed for what seems like the first time in my life.

I’m enjoying just being normal and it’s wonderful!

With gratitude, Cynthia."
